Project Background: The Viking Y-DNA Project was initiated in Stockholm in December 2004 as an offshoot of the Scandinavian Y-DNA Project. Many Americans of Norman, English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish ancestry are quite obviously of Scandinavian descent, although they do not have any family records or other official documents to prove it. With the help of genetic testing many of them might be able in the near future to link up with their Scandinavian siblings and the kin of their forefathers.
All relevant ethnic groups are being studied within this project.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Goals: The Viking Y-DNA Project is open to any male individual with a predicted or confirmed ancestor of a background linked historically with a Viking population. The project participants use a Y-DNA test ordered via FTDNA to determine their Y-DNA signature. Tests of 12 and 25 markers will be accepted, but you are encouraged to test for or upgrade to tests of 37 or 67 markers for the purposes of clarity of results.
The first purpose of the project is to clarify individual family origins, and the second purpose is to create a map of the migratory patterns of the ancient Scandinavian tribes. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Haplogroups found so far (2005-07-31) are I, (pI1a), (pI1c), R1a and R1b.
The Viking Y-DNA Project currently suffers from a slight bias towards haplogroup I1a. There are probably other haplogroups as well (such as G2, N, Q, R1a, and R1b), that form part of "the Viking thumbprint". We would therefore like to encourage everyone with a clear paternal origin in the Viking areas of the British Isles, or in Normandy in France, to join the Viking Y-DNA Project. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd.
