"Most Wanted" Kidds for the Y-DNA Study:
A documented descendant of Thomas Kidd II, eldest son of Thomas Kidd, the immigrant to Virginia. The study has no proven descendant of Thomas II, who married Alice Trigg. Finding a descendant of this line is very important--because we have good representation already from the line of William Kidd, younger son of Thomas Kidd the immigrant. FULL SPONSORSHIP will be provided to fund a 37-marker test for a documented descendant of Thomas Kidd II and Alice Trigg through one of their known sons Thomas III, b ca 1692, m (1) Margaret, (2) Elizabeth Laurence, (3) Phyllis; John, b ca 1694, m Rebecca Godbee; Daniel, b ca 1696, m unknown; or William, born and baptized 1716, m unknown. This family lived in Middlesex Co and Essex Co, VA. For details, please contact Sandra Kidd at skkidd AT bellsouth.net.
Any Kidds of Maryland descent, especially Calvert Co, Maryland.
Any Kidds with documented descent from Cambridgeshire, England, especially Soham Parish. FULL SPONSORSHIP to fund a 37-marker test will be provided for a Kidd with documented descent from Soham Parish who does not descend from either Thomas Kidd, emigrant to Virginia ca 1646, or Asa Kidd, emigrant to Illinois ca 1850s. For details, please contact Sandra Kidd at skkidd AT bellsouth.net.
Any Kidds from the Borders region of England and Scotland, and Kidds from Yorkshire.
All other Kidds of English, Irish, or Scottish origins, especially Kidds of Dundee, Scotland.
The Kidds' general ancestral origins and Derek Ham's research:
Study participant Derek Ham, who is a Kidd descendant from the British Isles, is tracking the ancestral origins of the Kidd family.
Here is a message from Derek, who welcomes visits to his website at www.geocities.com/djham@btinternet.com. If you are interested in where the Kidds came from centuries past, then Derek's website is the place for you!
Derek writes:
"Having investigated both genetic and cultural origins of the Kidd surname/pedigree, I deduced that its likely origin was ~640AD in the English-Scottish Borderlands and also, possibly, independently in Yorkshire and other English counties (www.geocities.com/djhamATbtinternet.com ).
My conjecture is that the surname developed from Cedd>Chide>Kide/Kyde>Kidd/Kydd over ~1000 years duration. This multiregional genetic model predicts each separate Kidd Group to have different origins in England and the Borders, stemming from distinctly different MRCAs. However, the Groups may hold a common cultural origin in early Saxon England. Furthermore, it appears that a TMRCA of ~1440 yrs (genetic distance=12) for unclassified participants N4591 and 68996, and TMRCA of ~1200 yrs (genetic distance=10) for 64728 and 68996, is consistent with this deep ancestral origin."
John S. Walden, a descendant of John Walden (Group 2 on the results page) has been most helpful in interpreting Y-DNA results for the study's participants of Virginia origins.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Results: As of fall 2008, we have 40 participants in the Kidd study. Questions about these results may be directed to Sandra Kidd, co-administrator of the study, at skkidd AT bellsouth.net.
Participants are listed by kit number for privacy reasons. To inquire about these lineages, please contact Sandra Kidd at skkidd AT bellsouth.net. Many of the participants are very interested in sharing information with other descendants.
Some participants have elected to share biographies for the Kidd Y-DNA website. These are marked by a asterisk * below. See the end of this page for participant bios.
The results break down into five Kidd groups, and two sets of ungrouped results.
Group 1: Virginia origins
Group 1 breaks down into three subgroups. All of the participants in this group have Virginia origins, and all believe they are descended from Thomas Kidd of Middlesex Co, Virginia, immigrant to Virginia ca 1646. Not all of these relationships are proven.
Group 1A includes two proven and documented descendants of Thomas Kidd, the immigrant (54404 and 59106). As a result, this group is considered the Thomas Kidd I haplotype. Group 1A is characterized by the fact that it members show a very close genetic connection, with only one-marker mutation in the group (participant 59106).
Group 1A:
* 54404: a descendant of Aaron Kidd (1712-1776), of Albemarle Co, VA, son of William Kidd and grandson of Thomas Kidd I
59106: a descendant of James Kidd (1715-died unknown) of Virginia and Georgia, son of William Kidd and grandson of Thomas Kidd I
* 62505: a descendant of William Henry Kidd (1823-1892), born in Amherst Co, VA, per his family's Bible; lived in Monroe/Chickasaw Cos, MS; died in Oklahoma
64299: a descendant of Benjamin Kidd (d. 1832), was in Caswell Co, NC, by 1790, moved to Williamson Co, TN, in early 1800s
92645: a descendant of William Kidd (1787-1876) who married Susannah Chastain Logan 2 Jun 1808, Amherst Co, VA, and who moved to Vermillion Co, IL before 1855
Group 1B includes two proven descendants of George Kidd, who moved from Franklin Co, VA, to Kanawha Co, VA (now WV), and then to Lawrence Co, OH; one likely descendant of George Kidd; and one proven descendant of John Kidd of Franklin Co, GA. The known commonality is that both George Kidd and John Kidd lived in Franklin Co, VA, in the early 1800s. This group believes that they may descend from James Kidd (1736-d unknown), son of Duel Kidd, who was son of William Kidd and grandson of Thomas Kidd I. While this is not proven, they are likely descendants of William Kidd through one of his sons who moved to central Virginia.
Group 1B:
N2383: a descendant of George Kidd (1777-) through son John S. Kidd
54402: a descendant of John Kidd (1769-1862), married Lucy Melton in Albemarle Co 1792, lived and died in Franklin Co, VA
59713: a descendant of George Kidd (1777-) through son John S. Kidd
84434: a descendant of Francis Marion Kidd (1808-bef 1870), family in lived in Marion/Johnson Cos, AR, and in Hopkins Co, TX
Group 1C includes four proven descendants of Benjamin Kidd (1714-1761) of Middlesex Co, VA, who married Judith Chowning in 1736 in Middlesex Co. Benjamin's son George Kidd moved to Amelia Co, VA, after his father's death.
Group 1C:
* 46060: a descendant of Benjamin Kidd through son George Kidd, of Amelia Co, VA, through son Lodawick Kidd who lived in Dinwiddie Co, VA, and Tippah Co, MS
* 70923: father of 46060 (tested because 46060 had a one-step mutation that was proven to have occurred in one generation when the father's and son's results were compared)
* 68936: a descendant of Benjamin Kidd though son George Kidd, of Amelia Co, VA, through his son George Kidd, Jr
* 58487: a descendant of James Kidd of Bute/Warren Cos, NC,and Mecklenburg Co, VA, through his son John B. Kidd (1794-1862). DNA results led to new research on this James Kidd, which resulted in determining that he did have ties to Amelia Co, VA, and appears to definitely be another previously unknown son of George Kidd of Amelia Co.
Group 2: Virginia origins, mainly Caroline Co, VA
Group 2 shares a common connection to Caroline Co, VA, with most of this group descending from William Kidd, who died in 1802 in Caroline Co, VA. Also included in this group is a Walden descendant, whose haplotype indicates that he is closely related to this Kidd Group 2.
NOTE: Many years of genealogy research suggests that this group is part of the larger Kidd family that originated in Middlesex Co, VA. However, this group 2 and groups 1A/B/C do not share a common recent ancestor, so research into the origins of both groups continues.
Group 2:
9796: a descendant of William Kidd, d 1802 in Caroline Co, through his son James. His son, also named James, moved to Fayette Co, KY
9893: a descendant of John Walden, b 1756 in VA, orphaned as infant
54443: a descendant of Henry Kidd, b 1765, who was listed as Henry Kidd of Caroline Co when he purchased land in Fluvanna Co in 1791. Henry and descendants lived in Fluvanna Co, VA
64046: a descendant of William Kidd, d 1802 in Caroline Co, through his son Philip, who moved to Fayette Co, KY
74260: a descendant of William Kidd, d 1802 in Caroline Co, through his son Willis. This family stayed in the area, in Essex Co, VA
Group 3: I haplogroup, American
70459 and 21227 are close matches. They have no matches with other Kidds in the study.
21227 is a descendant of Andrew Kidd, b 1729, County Tyrone, Ireland
Ungrouped--American origin:
These Kidds all have Virginia origins, but have no matches to Group 1 or Group 2.
59624: a descendant of William J. Kidd, b 1818, Virginia
68996: a descendant of William Kidd (1740s-1803) of Buckingham Co, VA, through his son Lewis (1774-bef 1850), who moved to Knox Co, TN
69948: a descendant of Samuel P. Kidd (1815-1856) of Richmond, VA. Samuel's father believed to be a William Kidd
Ungrouped--British Isles origin:
These two men have British Isles origins, but have no matches with each other or with the other Kidds in the study.
* N4591: a descendant of James Kidd, b 1732, United Kingdom
68997: a descendant of James Kidd, b 1709, Soham Parish, Cambridgeshire, England, whose son Asa Kidd emigrated from Soham to Bureau Co, IL, in the 1850s
Note: Participant 68997 was recruited for the Kidd Y-DNA study because his ancestor Asa Kidd migrated directly from Soham Parish in England, an area long believed to be the home of Thomas Kidd, immigrant to Virginia ca 1646. This participant did not match any of the Virginia Kidds in the study. A search continues for other Kidds of English origin for the study.
Participant Biographies (if you are a Kidd Y-DNA study participant and wish to add your bio to this site, please contact Sandra Kidd)
Group 1A:
54404 is a descendant of Aaron Kidd, who was christened in Middlesex Co, VA, 24 Jan 1713 as the son of William and Margaret Kidd and who died in Albemarle Co, VA, before March 1776 (Wife Susannah, maiden name unknown).
William Kidd (1675-1727) of Middlesex Co, VA, was the son of Thomas Kidd, the immigrant ancestor to Virginia ca 1640s, who died after 28 May 1680, leaving two sons Thomas (II) and William, who was father to Aaron Kidd.
Aaron Kidd had three sons named in his 1776 will: William, Benjamin, and Samuel; of these three, Samuel died without heirs.
54404 descends from son William Kidd (wife's name not known), who moved to Tazewell Co, VA, in the late 1700s, where he died likely ca 1802.
William Kidd of Tazewell Co had four sons whose names have been proven: Larkin, Elias, Sherrod, and Elijah. The first three sons moved to the Wayne Co, KY, area in the early 1800s.
The ancestor of 54404 was Elijah Kidd (ca 1787-ca 1855), who married Matilda Neel and lived on Wolf Creek in present-day Bland Co, VA.
Elijah's son Henry Chappman Kidd (ca 1820-1891) was the father of Absalom Ray Kidd (1844-1911), all of Bland Co, VA.

Number 62505 is a descendant of William Henry Kidd who was born 13 Nov 1823 in Amherst Co., VA. and died 15 Feb 1892 in Poteau, Leflore Co., OK. He married Sarah Louisa Wallace who was born 07 Jul 1847 in Pickens Co., AL and died 22 Jan 1929 in Poteau, Leflore Co., OK. They were married 08 Jan 1867 in the home of her father, James M. Wallace, MS. They had 10 children all born in MS between 1867 and 1884. Number 62505 descends from one of the sons named Robert Lee Kidd, often found in records as Bob Lee Kidd. He was born 24 Aug 1876 near Oklaona, Chickasaw County, MS and died 03 Mar 1959 while living in Poteau, Leflore County, OK. For more information, plese contact Buddy Kidd at ebkidd AT att.net.
Group 1C:
46060 is a descendant of Benjamin Kidd Sr., born about 1714 (presumably in Middlesex Co., VA). In 1736, Benjamin married Judith Chowning in Middlesex Co., and he died there in 1761.
His parents are unproven at this time. I believe that he was the son of William Kidd (1675-1727, the son of immigrant Thomas Kidd, 1625-1680) and his wife Margaret, but this is unproven. His birth is not recorded in the Christ Church register, whereas all the other children of this couple ARE listed there. I have attributed Benjamin to this couple because he is not listed as the son of Thomas Kidd, Jr. in Thomas's probate records, and there appears to be no other male Kidd to attribute him to.
Benjamin’s eldest son, George Kidd, Sr., born in 1737 in Middlesex Co., VA, was the executor of Benjamin’s will, and shortly after performing that duty moved with his family to Amelia Co., VA.; he died there in 1797.
George Sr.’s second son, Lodawick Kidd, was born about 1765 in VA, and died in Tippah Co., MS in 1856. He had preceded several of his sons to this area, and was joined by them in 1848.
Lodawick’s eldest son, William Kidd (1797, VA – 1883, Benton Co., MS) outlived two wives and fathered 15 children. Kits 46060 and 70923 descend from Eutimeous Elanious Canaugh “Tim” Kidd (1846, VA – 1906, Benton Co., MS), one of the younger sons.
For more information on this line, please contact Reiley Kidd at radcrk AT comcast.net
70923 is the father of 46060, and shares his direct line of descent. Interestingly, there is one one-step mutation between father and son, at DYS# 460.
68936 is also a descendant of Benjamin Kidd Sr., born about 1714 (presumably in Middlesex Co., VA). In 1736, Benjamin married Judith Chowning in Middlesex Co., and he died there in 1761 (described in more detail under 46060 above).
Benjamin’s eldest son, George Kidd, Sr., born in 1737 in Middlesex Co., VA, was the executor of Benjamin’s will, and shortly after performing that duty moved with his family to Amelia Co., VA.; he died there in 1797.
George Sr.’s eldest son, George Jr. (1763, Amelia Co., VA – 1844, Amelia Co., VA) and his wife Mary Ann Southall were the parents of 4 girls and two sons. Their eldest son, James Kidd, was born about 1794; he served in the War of 1812, and received bounty land in Kentucky for this service. In 1828 he moved west with his family to Greene Co., KY, and later moved to Barren Co., KY. In 1852 he moved west, to Grayson Co., TX, where he died in 1882.
James’ son, John Tinsley Kidd (1836, KY – 1921, TX) had 8 children, the youngest being William Henry Kidd, the grandfather of the donor for Kit 68936. William Henry Kidd was born in 1866 in TX, and died there in 1950. For more information on this line, please contact Reiley Kidd at radcrk AT comcast.net

Ungrouped-British Isles orgin:
N4591 (Y-Search ID : EPQQ4) is descendant from James Kidd (buried 1794 at St Marys, Winkfield, Berkshire, England, aged 62 yrs) and his wife, Margarett (also buried at St Marys in 1809, aged 78 yrs). Their only child, John, was born ‘out-of-county’ and died in 1845, Winkfield. My father informed me our Kidd roots were Scottish, and the only James Kidd marriage to a Margarett (nee Hutton) found on record was in 1772, Edinburgh, Scotland (IGI) - James was a Ship Master of South Leith, recorded last resident in Edinburgh in 1774, 1776 and 1778 (though not later than 1779).
John Kidd married Elizabeth North in 1801, Winkfield, and had three sons James (1803-62), George (1807-56) and John (1809-76), all married with children.
N4591 descends from George Kidd (m. Mary Osman), who moved to Reading, Berkshire c.1840. They had four children : Elizabeth Kezia, Mary Eliza, Mary(Maria) Ann and Thomas. Elizabeth and Mary became schoolmistresses, Maria married Thomas Cocks in 1865 and emmigrated (1892) to Brisbane, Australia.
The ancestor of N4591 was Thomas Kidd (b.1846), who married Mary Ellen Barkshire in 1873 and lived in Windsor, Berkshire. Their four children were George William, Samuel James (1876-1938), Ellen Mary and Sarah Annie. Samuel married Bertha Jane Jelliff in 1903 and my father, Reginald James Kidd (born 1915, Alton, Hampshire), was their only child. The Ham surname was adopted by my father from his step-father, whose ancestry had likewise adopted the surname ~100 yrs previously.
